The Leadership (LAC) Program at Camp Ten Oaks is specifically designed for youth who want to develop their leadership skills in a camp environment. The focus of the program is to build leadership capacity that can be applied in the day-to-day lives of participants by giving them a chance to learn and experience the ins and outs of Camp Ten Oaks. It is not a counselor in training program.
The LAC Program is designed to give our LAC campers an orientation to camp life, as well as provide experiential learning opportunities and situations where leadership skills will be used and enhanced.
Although presented with a unique opportunity to participate in many facets of the camp community, LAC participants are not considered to be camp staff. LAC participants are, first and foremost, campers. While LACs experience camp with an eye to leadership and learning, they lead and they learn through play by enjoying a variety of camp activities and interactions with the rest of the camp community.
Ultimately, this program is about growth. LACs get to know and challenge themselves as leaders, while also having the opportunity to meet other leaders from the community who will share their experience and skills. LAC participants take part in camp life, but more importantly, they also help make camp life happen - from working with staff and campers, to seeing what really happens in the kitchen, to having a fireside chat with the Camp Director about what it takes for a camp program to work.
One of the unique elements of the LAC program is its exploration of how leadership relates to social justice, for example, through advocacy and activism or in relation to issues of social inequality.
